    Description

Neil Armstrong's legendary "incident" at Nellis AFB, his original report

Test Pilot: Neil Armstrong's Report (Carbon) Regarding the "Nellis Affair" (F-104A Rough Landing), May 1962, Directly from The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. Two pages, carbon copy on thin 8.5" x 11" paper, dated May 24, 1962. "Memorandum for Chief, Operations Division. Subject: F-104A #749, Incident of 21 May 1962". Armstrong gives a complete, detailed, and technical description of that landing in this report with the following final assumptions on page two:

    "It is assumed that:
    a) initial landing gear damage was due to inadvertent high sink rate touchdown caused by poor depth perception, permitting
    b) loss of left rear gear door, causing
    c) loss of ventral fin, damage to underbody, and extension of tail hook
    d) loss of ventral fin (antenna) caused communication loss
    e) extended tail hook engaged the upwind (RW 20L) Nellis barrier cable while the aircraft was airborne causing reported jolt and noise."

Armstrong had attempted to land his F-104 Starfighter at Edwards but aborted before landing gear was fully deployed. As he turned the nose up, the underside of the plane suffered severe damage that affected his radio communications. Flying to Nellis AFB, he signaled the tower of a problem by wagging his wings and attempted to land. His tail hook deployed causing more damage to the plane and also to the runway. To add to the misery, Edwards sent Milt Thompson out in another Starfighter to pick Armstrong up, but his unfamiliarity with the plane caused another rough landing and more runway damage. Bill Dana was then dispatched to pick Armstrong AND Thompson up but he also messed up the landing. Finally, the senior officers at Nellis sent all three home to Edwards by road.

The text of this report is likely available but here is a chance to own Neil Armstrong's own copy of the report just as it came out of his typewriter! Light wear and toning, fine. Sealed in numbered archival sleeves, CAG 1002062-001 & 1002062-002. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
