Space-Worn International Space Station Underwear and Socks made for U.S. astronaut C. Michael Foale. On his last flight, October 18, 2003 to April 29, 2004, Dr. Foale served as Expedition-8 Commander. The 8th Mission to the ISS was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, aboard the Soyuz TMA-3 spacecraft, docking with the International Space Station on October 20, 2003. As Expedition 8 Commander, Dr. Foale spent six months aboard the ISS, performing one 3 hour 55 minute spacewalk. The mission concluded with undocking from the station and safe landing back in Kazakhstan on April 29, 2004. The astronauts and cosmonauts were not permitted to take space clothes with them in the Soyuz spacecraft. The Progress cargo ship delivered it to the ISS. The shirt, shorts, and socks are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, Kentaur-Science Co. Ltd., in Russian and English, signed in ink by its General Director, A. Yarov, indicating it was "for use by American astronaut C. Foale during Expedition 8.".The original plastic bag, slit open at the bottom, is present. Also present is a 4.75" x 7" color photograph of Dr. Foale aboard the ISS, wearing this shirt. The shorts and socks are not visible.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
