Space Shuttle (STS) Model as Presented to Astronaut John Young, Directly from his Personal Collection, Certified and Signed. A black over white model representing the Space Transportation System orbiter with overall dimensions of 5.75" across the wings x 7.5" nose to tail x 3.5" top to bottom. It is mounted to a wooden base with a brass plate engraved:
    Presented to
    John W. Young
    For your outstanding contributions
    to the Space Shuttle Program.
    This model is made from
Space Shuttle tile material coated with
    Surface RCG coating.

John Young was commander of both the first shuttle test mission (Columbia STS-1) and the ninth mission (Columbia-Spacelab STS-9). This made him the first (and still only) person in history to have piloted four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, Apollo CM, Apollo LM, and Space Shuttle.

The development of a functional thermal protection system to protect the orbiter from the 3000°F heat of atmospheric reentry was one of the major engineering hurtles NASA had to overcome in designing a reusable orbital spacecraft. This particular model was made of the same material as the thousands of silica surface insulation tiles covering many parts of the shuttle. The black coating on the tile is Reaction Cured Glass (RCG); it protects the porous silica and increases the heat sink properties. As with the tiles used on the actual shuttle, this model has a felt pad glued to the underneath; this helps absorb the stresses and bending that could damage the tiles.

On the felt surface underneath the model, John Young has written: "From my Personal Collection. John Young".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
