    Description

    Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-61-C) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 47F, Directly from the Family Collection of Astronaut S. David Griggs, with Letter of Certification. A 40mm x 40mm (overall) sterling silver medal is one of only 67 flown (202 minted) on this January 12-18, 1986, with a seven-person crew including future NASA administrator Charles Bolden, the first Costa-Rican-born astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz (the first of seven missions for him), and a sitting congressman, Representative Bill Nelson (D-FL). The obverse features the mission insignia with Columbia in re-entry with a colorful delta pattern along with the surnames of the crew, the two payload specialists at bottom. The reverse includes their names around and the engraved launch and landing dates. The serial number is found on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. Original case with numbered sticker on the bottom included. The first example from this mission Heritage has offered. Excellent.

    Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from daughter Carre Griggs stating, in part: "I hereby confirm and certify that STS-61 C silver Robbins Medallion, serial number 47, was flown aboard the STS-61 C mission January 12-18, 1986. It was acquired through the astronaut flight office by my father, David Griggs... This medallion has been part of our family's collection of space artifacts and mementos since my father received them after each mission"
