    Payload Data Retreival System Operations

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-3) Flown "PDRS Ops" Checklist Book Directly From the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Jack Lousma, with Signed LOA. A checklist book of approximately 260 pages printed on 8" x 6" tabbed cardstock, three-hole punched, and held together with three binder rings. On the front cover is the mission insignia and title with a red line at the right edge. It is illustrated with multiple charts and drawings; numerous handwritten notations and highlight are found throughout. There are five major tabbed sections: "RMS (Remote Manipulator System) Tests", "PDP (Plasma Diagnostics Package)", "IECM (Induced Environment Contamination Monitor)", "Contingency Operations", and "Reference Data" with multiple other tabbed sub-sections and two separate tables of contents. One of the main purposes of this mission was to test the all-important Remote Manipulator System with an attached payload. The full explanation of the objectives and in-flight use are explained in the text of the included LOA below. A rare and important flown relic from the third orbital test of the Space Shuttle. Fine with light use evident.

Included with this lot is a very detailed signed Letter of Certification on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "This Payload Data Retrieval System (PDRS) Checklist was flown during the third orbital test flight (STS-3) of the Columbia Space Shuttle during March 22-30, 1982. One of the major objectives of STS-3 was to evaluate the operation of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) with a payload attached to it. It was only the second flight of the RMS, but its first test with an attached payload. The payload was the Plasma Diagnostic Package (PDP), which was not only a test mass for the RMS, but it also contained several sensors to measure the environment surrounding the Space Shuttle to determine its usefulness for future scientific investigations. The RMS was controlled and viewed from the aft section of the Space Shuttle's flight deck. Hand controllers were used by the astronaut to remove and replace the PDP from its mounting platform in Columbia's Payload Bay. The RMS could be flown either automatically or manually while the PDP recorded scientific data during preplanned sweeps over the Space Shuttle for a total of four, half-day sessions. The PDRS Checklist contains all of the procedures for this combined evaluation of the RMS and collection of data by the PDP. The checklist contains over 200 pages, is about 1.5 inches thick, and has many inflight annotations used for RMS and PDP evaluation. Among other subjects, it contains sections for RMS Powerup, Activation, Normal Operations, PDP Operations, Contingency Operations, and Powerdown. I hereby certify this PDRS Checklist is from my personal collection and has been in my possession since the STS-3 mission."
