DescriptionSpace Shuttle Columbia (STS-3) Flown Payload Ops Checklist Book Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Jack Lousma, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A ninety+ page checklist book printed on 8" x 6" tabbed cardstock, three-hole punched, and held together with three binder rings with a Beta cloth spine with a handwritten "Payload Ops". There are nine tabbed sections covering three major subjects: "Nominal Procedures", "Back-Up Procedures", and "Reference Data". We note numerous handwritten annotations throughout the checklist. On the front cover is the STS-3 mission insignia with a red line at the right edge. It is signed at the left side: "This 'Payload Ops/ Checklist' flew-/ with me on STS-3./ March 22-30, 1982/ Jack Lousma/ CDR STS-3". Light soiling and signs of use. Very fine condition.
Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify the STS-3 (Columbia) Payload Ops C/L (Checklist) that accompanies this letter was flown in space and used by the crew aboard the STS 3 mission during March 22-30, 1982. Besides testing the Columbia Space Shuttle and the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), the flight crew performed numerous scientific experiments located in the Payload Bay and the mid-deck. This checklist contains detailed operating procedures for most of these experiments, some of which required close operation and observation by the crew, and others that were simply monitored after being activated onboard. The Office of Space Science (OSS) payload was a package of several experiments in the Payload Bay. The Plasma Diagnostic Package (PDP), which measured particles and radiation around the Space Shuttle, doubled as the first test of the RMS with an object attached. The experiments also examined a process known as 'electrophoresis', acquired solar data, performed biology experiments, and investigated a wide variety of other space-related phenomena that can be reviewed more intensively at website www.nasa.gov by entering the search box with 'STS 3 Press Kit'. This STS 3 Payload Ops C/L has been in my possession since the mission in 1982."
