Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown Avco Ablator Material in Lucite on Desk Pen Display Originally from the Collection of Lead Designer David Mosher. A substantial 2.5" x 1" x 0.5" segment of heat-singed Avco 5026-39 as used on the leading edges of the Space Shuttle Columbia, sealed in Lucite on a 5.5" x 3" wooden base bearing an engraved plaque: "Avco 5026-39 Ablator/ Flown On Space Shuttle Flight No. 1/ April 1981". Avco's David Mosher was heavily responsible for the design of the Apollo heat shield. After that project was completed, he led the Avco design team for the Space Shuttle heat shield in cooperation with Grumman. After the successful completion of the first shuttle mission, he was presented with this pen holder desk set. Included with this lot is a group of related material including: two Avco promotional booklets title "Avco and the Space Shuttle" (both different), a printed obituary of David Mosher, a photocopy of a NASA technical Memorandum on Space Shuttle Structures and Materials (NASA TM X-2273), and two first day covers ("Apollo 8" and "First Man on the Moon") from Mosher's collection. A very rare item, the first of its type we have handled. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
