    Description

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown American Flag with Crew-Signed Photo in Framed Display. A 5.75" x 4" cloth U.S. flag that accompanied crewmembers Young and Crippen aboard the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle program, April 12-14, 1981. It is handsomely matted and framed to an overall 18" x 27" with an embroidered mission insignia patch, a 10" x 8" NASA color photo boldly signed by both, and an engraved plate. The original 8.5" x 11" presentation certificate from which this flag was removed is included with the lot. It bears two color photos, the mission insignia, and facsimile signatures of John Young and Bob Crippen, along with text as follows: "Presented to NANCY L. GUNTER. This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle 'Columbia' (STS-1) April 12 - 14, 1981. It is presented to you in recognition of the significant contribution you made to the success of the mission." Crippen has written: "To Nancy Gunter,/ Thanks for a job/ well done!/ Bob Crippen" and Young has added his signature: "John Young". Nancy Gunter was the Astronaut Office Manager at the Kennedy Space Center. A great remembrance of the now-completed Shuttle program; would look great on an office or den wall. Light mounting stains on the flag, otherwise excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
