    One of only 67 flown on the maiden voyage of Challenger

    Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-6) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 49F, Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Jerry Ross, with Signed Certificate of Authenticity. This 46mm x 40mm hexagonal sterling silver medal was one of only sixty-seven flown (of 303 minted) aboard the first flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger along with crewmembers Paul Weitz, Karol Bobko, Donald Peterson, and Story Musgrave. The obverse features the Shuttle and TDRS in flight, the ship's name, and the crew's surnames. The reverse also includes the crew's surnames along with the engraved information, Launched "April 4, 1983" and Landed "April 9, 1983 / RW22 Edwards AFB CA". The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. The original Robbins plastic case with numbered sticker on the bottom is included. A stunning and rare medal. Only the second example Heritage has offered. Excellent.

    Included with this lot is a signed COA by Jerry Ross on his letterhead reading, in full: "This STS-6 silver Robbins medallion (number 49 F) flew aboard the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger during STS-6 mission. The medallion comes from the personal collection of Colonel Jerry L. Ross. The medallion was flown by the crew of the mission for Colonel Ross to thank him for his support of the mission. The STS-6 mission was highlighted by the deployment of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, TDRS-1 and by the first spacewalk conducted during the shuttle program using the Extravehicular Mobility Unit space suits. The flight launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida on April 4, 1983, and landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on April 9, 1983.
