Description

Skylab III (SL-4): New York City 14K Gold Medal Awarded to Mission Pilot William Pogue by Mayor Abraham Beame in 1974 and Directly from his Personal Collection, with Signed LOA. A beautiful and rarely-offered 35mm 14K gold medal, manufactured by Medallic Arts, on a 28" neck ribbon. The obverse bears the Seal of New York City depicting a Native American and a colonist to either side of a shield bearing four windmill sails; above is a Bald Eagle and beneath is the Latin phrase "Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci" (Seal of the City of New York). On the reverse is engraved the following: "The City of New York to William R. Pogue of Skylab 4 by Abraham D. Beame, Mayor, April 24, 1974". All three of the Skylab 4 astronauts received these awards, making them honorary New Yorkers, for their record-setting eighty-four day space mission. Weight is approximately 22.6 grams. Excellent condition with just a few minor scratches on the reverse.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed letter from Pogue recalling his memories of receiving this medal. The letter was received too late to be included in the printed catalog. Its content is transcribed below (see last image):

"The Skylab 4 crew returned to Earth February 8, 1974. Following post flight physicals and debrief with key JSC personnel we began making appearances scheduled by JSC and NASA Headquarters Public Affairs Offices.

"These appearances included the city of Chicago, a swing up to the west coast from Los Angeles to Seattle, which was sponsoring a Worlds' Fair and stops at space contractor facilities to give recognition to those who contributed to the success of our mission.

"Our stop at New York City included a visit to the Mayor's office where the Mayor Abraham Beame hosted our talks to the citizens of New York City. All three of us (Jerry, Bill and Ed) made brief comments regarding our mission and Mayor Beame awarded all three of us a City of New York gold medal, commenting that these were the last three Gold Medals in their inventory. We were most impressed and expressed our gratitude for the award.

"After 38 years it seemed appropriate to put them back in circulation by placing one on sale in a public auction. Thank you to residents of the Big Apple.
