    Description

Skylab II (SL-3) Signed Limited Edition Crew and Wives Patch Stickers Launch Cover, #9 of 14, Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, with Signed COA. A 9.375" x 4.125" cover canceled at Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 28, 1973, the date of launch. At the left is attached a 3.625" diameter mission insignia sticker. To its right is attached a 3.625" diameter "Wives' patch" decal. All around are the signatures of the crew and their wives: "Alan L Bean", "Jack Lousma", "Owen Garriott", "Helen Garriott", "Gratia Lousma", and "Sue Bean". It is stamped "000009". On the verso is handwritten "Ardis/ number 9 - 14" along with their address label on the flap. Ardis Shanks was the designer of the wives patch. A rare and interesting item. Extremely fine condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "This First-Day cover No. 9, with the official Skylab II (SL-3) emblem and the corresponding wives' emblem affixed, was post-marked on the mission Launch Day, July 28, 1973. It was signed after receipt in the U.S. Mail. I hereby certify that all of the flight crew signatures and those of the wives are original. The official Skylab II emblem was created long before the mission, and the story of its design is well-documented elsewhere. Briefly, it depicts the three prime objectives of the Skylab missions, that is, studies of the sun, earth, and medical aspects of long-duration spaceflight. The wives' emblem was created shortly before the mission without the knowledge of the flight crew, who first discovered it in orbit after docking with the Skylab Space Station. Three of the wives' emblems were attached to the inside doors of the Command Module lockers containing equipment that would be removed and stowed aboard the Skylab. Setting a record of nearly two-months in space, the Skylab II mission orbited the "Good Earth" 858 times and traveled some 24,500,000 miles before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on September 25, 1973."
