Description

Skylab II (SL-3) Flown Music Cassette Tape in Framed Display with Crew-Signed Beta Cloth Patch Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, with Signed LOA. To have music to listen to while onboard Skylab, the astronauts recorded their favorite LPs onto cassettes and sent them up on the initial Skylab I launch. Here is one of Jack Lousma's cassettes containing popular orchestral music. The 60-minute Extended Range cassette has a handwritten title: "Skylab - Cassette #14/ Jack Lousma - Mantovani Orchestra". It is matted in a handsome 9.25" x 15.25" framed beneath a 5.5" x 4.5" (sight size) Beta cloth mission insignia patch signed by the three-man crew: "Alan Bean", "Owen Garriott", and "Jack Lousma". At the bottom is a printed statement signed by Lousma: "I personally selected the music on/ this cassette and played it while/ aboard the Skylab Space Station./ [signed] Jack Lousma/ Pilot Skylab II/ July 28 - Sept. 25, 1973". A very attractive and interesting display. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify the framed music cassette that accompanies this letter was flown in space and provided entertainment for me on numerous occasions during the 59-1/2 day mission aboard the Skylab II (SL-3) Space Station mission during July 28 - September 25, 1973. The Skylab II mission traveled 24,400,000 miles during that time and completed 858 revolutions of the Good Earth. The Skylab II patch has been personally signed by each crew member. The patch is made of flame retardant beta-cloth material and is similar to the crew patches sewn to inflight clothing, including the Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits used for space walks. Prior to the mission, each astronaut selected his favorite music, mine from personal 33-1/3 rpm record albums, to be carried aboard the Skylab Space Station. The music was transcribed to cassettes and stowed aboard the Skylab Space Station prior to its launch on May 14, 1973. Thus, this cassette traveled an additional 75 days of miles and revolutions more than the numbers stated above exclusively for the Skylab II mission. Each crewman had a portable cassette player that could be secured in his sleep compartment or workstation for private listening, or in the wardroom for group listening during mealtime. The music on both sides of Cassette 14 is by the Mantovani Orchestra, playing easy-listening music contemporary to the era."
