Flew 24.4 million miles in space

Skylab II (SL-3) Flown Largest-Size American Flag and Crew Emblem in Framed Display Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, with Signed LOA. An 18" x 11.5" cloth U.S. flag and a 3.5" diameter (sight size) Beta cloth mission insignia patch matted and framed to an overall 21" x 23" with a beautiful color photo of Lousma during an EVA and a signed statement as follows: "This U.S. flag and crew emblem were flown aboard/ the Skylab Space Station orbiting the Good Earth/ for 59.5 days and traveling 24.4 million miles./ [signed] Jack Lousma/ Pilot Skylab II/ July 28 - Sept. 25, 1973. These large flags are quite impressive and scarce. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify this 12"x 18" US Flag and Beta-cloth crew patch were both flown on the 59-1/2 day Skylab II Space Station mission during July 28-September 25, 1973. During that spaceflight, Skylab II completed 858 revolutions of the Good Earth and traveled 24,400,000 miles. The Beta-cloth crew patch is made of non-flammable fabric. Identical emblems were sewn onto the crewman's inflight coveralls and also on the Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits used during spacewalks, launch, and departure from the Skylab Space Station. The photograph was taken through the spacecraft window during one of three Skylab II spacewalks. Most of the Good Earth is reflected in the crewman's visor. This US Flag and Beta-cloth crew patch are from my personal collection and have been in my sole possession since the Skylab II mission."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
