Description

Watch Presented by President Nixon to Astronaut Paul Weitz.

Skylab 1 (SL-2): Presidential Presentation Watch from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Paul Weitz. A handsome men's Gruen Precision 25 jewel, autowind, 10K RGP wristwatch and matching band with the following engraved on the back: "CAPT. PAUL J./ WEITZ - USN/ 5-25-73 - 6-22-73/ RICHARD M. NIXON." Skylab 1 was the first manned mission to Skylab, the first U.S. orbital space station, and it established a new endurance record for manned space flight with its three-man crew. There is included a signed, handwritten Letter of Authenticity included from Weitz on his personal letterhead giving the complete story of this watch:

"I hereby certify that the Gruen wristwatch presented with this letter was received by me after the completion of the Skylab I mission. We had splashed down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and were enroute to San Diego aboard the USS Ticonderoga. The White House 'requested' that the crew, Pete Conrad, Joe Kerwin and myself proceed to the California White House at San Clemente to meet with the President. We were flown by ship's helicopter to the mainland, where we were presented to President Nixon, who was hosting the Secretary of the USSR, Leonid Breshnev. After a short ceremony, as shown in the accompanying photo, we returned to the ship and arrived in San Diego the next day, after which we were flown via USAF C-141 to Houston. This watch is from my personal collection of artifacts and has been in my possession since I received it." A 10" x 8" color photo of the crew with Nixon and Breshnev is included. Excellent condition.
