DescriptionSaturn IB Marshall Space Flight Center Launch Vehicle Model on Base with Original Case. An impressive and quite rare official model, circa 1960s, from the Graphic Engineering and Models Branch at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. On a wooden base of 5.5" square, this 1/96 scale Saturn IB model stands approximately 29.25" tall. There is a tiny human figure attached to the base to signify the enormity of this rocket. It appears to be absolutely complete. Separable sections include the base, first stage (S-IB), second stage (S-IVB), instrument unit, a two-piece lunar module (ascent and descent stages), service module, command module, and launch escape tower. Very desirable and seldom seen at auction; this is only the second example Heritage has offered. There is some light toning and surface scratching, otherwise fine condition.
Included is the blue painted wooden carrying case with handle, 27" x 7" x 9", labeled "SATURN IB No. 219". It bears a Marshall SFC "FRAGILE" sticker (1964) and the remains of a shipping label where the Marshall Center is listed as the return address. Interior is padded with custom cutouts. Some dents and dings on the case as expected, overall very good.
The actual Saturn IB rocket stood 223 feet tall. It had two stages that are clearly marked on this model. It utilized eight liquid-fuel engines in its first stage and one liquid-fuel engine in its second. Altogether, there were nine of them launched- all successfully. As far as manned missions, it was used to propel Apollo 7, all three Skylab missions, and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
