    Roger Chaffee's Personal Timex Watch, Returned to his Family after his Death in Apollo 1. A 1960s-era Timex Electric men's watch with a chrome-plated bezel and a stainless steel back marked "WATERPROOF", complete with a period Speidel Twist-O-Flex watchband. Roger Bruce Chaffee (1935-1967) was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and earned a B.S. in aeronautical engineering at Purdue. A Navy ROTC student, he entered active duty upon graduation in 1957 and trained to became a pilot. Chaffee was one of the third group of astronauts chosen by NASA in October 1963. He was named to the Apollo 1 crew in March 1966 and that would have been his first flight. On January 27, 1967, a flash fire broke out in the sealed command module during a training exercise. All three crewmembers on board, Grissom, White, and Chaffee, were tragically killed before workmen could free them. Included with this lot is an 8" x 10" B&W photo of the three astronauts during training in the spacecraft with this watch clearly shown on Chaffee's wrist. Normal wear, fine condition.

    Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by his son, Stephen Chaffee. It reads, in full: "From the Chaffee Estate. This Timex wristwatch was the property of Roger Bruce Chaffee. It was one of the two items returned to the Chaffee family after the fire of Apollo 1. The other item that was returned was his wedding ring."
