Description

Project Mercury: Original Artwork for Number Twenty-One "Grissom in Space" Card from Topps' 1963 "Astronauts" Series. A 3.5" x 4.75" flexichrome photo with hand-painted color embellishments of the second American in space, "Gus" Grissom (in his spacesuit), who made a sub-orbital flight in Liberty Bell 7 on July 21, 1961. Grissom would also fly in Gemini 3, the first two-man American mission, in 1965. Tragically, he died in the Apollo 1 cabin fire during a launch rehearsal test in January 1967. Topps issued this popular fifty-five trading card set in 1963 at the end of the early Mercury series of space launches. This is the very desirable artwork for one of the key cards in the set. The back is hand-numbered, otherwise blank. Excellent condition save for one tiny chip at the lower left corner.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
