    Description

Project Mercury: NASA "Introduction to Project Mercury and Site Handbook" MG-101, Dated September 1960, in Original Binding. A massive book in a custom binder prepared for NASA by Western Electric under Contract No. NAS 1-430. Published eight months before Alan Shepard historic flight, this 300+ page book is divided into two major sections. The first: "The Introduction to Project Mercury presents a brief explanation of (1) the objectives of the mission, (2) ground monitoring and control, (3) the flight sequence, (4) the air-to-ground communications system, and (5) the personnel assigned to the mission. The information is general; it does not include technical details of systems that are described in manuals specifically written for those systems." The second: "The Site Handbook contains information on the functions, equipment, facilities, and environment of the sites. Functional block diagrams, simplified schematics, charts, and maps show the interrelationship and locations of the systems at each site, as well as its administrative organization. Sites that have the same or nearly similar system configurations are combined into a single section." There are dozens of pull-out charts. Early and rare, the first we have encountered. Light wear, fine.
