DescriptionNWA 4734 - LUNAR SAMPLE FROM MOROCCO PAIRED TO OTHER IMPORTANT LUNAR SAMPLES.
Lunar achondrite (mare basalt)
The second specimen of the Moon in this collection is a partial slice of a lunar meteorite which was purchased from Moroccan desert nomads. A fascinating association exists between three meteorites found on the La Paz Icefield of Antarctica and NWA 4734-the 4,734th meteorite to be recovered and classified from the North West Africa grid of the Sahara by the Meteoritical Society's Nomenclature Committee. They are petrographic and geochemical matches. In effect, NWA 4734 appears to have originated from the same crater and same impact event on the Moon as other lunar meteorites that also found their way to Earth. This cream-colored partial slice is a pristine magmatic sample primarily composed of coarse grains of pyroxene and plagioclase, and accented with dark impact melt. Two unusually large grains of anorthosite for this meteorite are seen near the lower and upper margins. This is a select example of a piece of the Moon featuring a most unusual ancestry. Accompanied by a Macovich Collection provenance and the abstract on NWA 4734 that appeared in the Meteoritical Bulletin XCIII (2008). 15 x 12 x 1mm and 0.311 grams.
