Neil Armstrong's Personal U.S. Flag Flown Over the U.S. Capitol on July 20, 1969 With the Original Box and Typed Letters Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. An historic opportunity to own the flag flown over the U.S. Capitol on July 20, 1969, the day the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon. Made by Delta Flag Company, the 50-star U.S. flag measures 3' x 5' and is folded and housed in the original manufacturer's box. Written in red ink on the top lid is "Ricky Armstrong" and "12741 7-21 McCulloch" is handwritten on the end of the box. A one page typed signed letter on Architect of the Capitol letterhead, dated July 21, 1969, from J. George Stewart, Architect of the Capitol, to the Honorable William M. McCulloch, Republican Congressman from Ohio, and reads in full:"My dear Congressman McCulloch:
"This is to certify that the accompanying flag was flown over the United States Capitol on July 20, 1969, the day the Apollo 11 Astronauts landed and walked on the Moon. I understand that you will present this flag to Ricky Armstrong, son of Mr. Neil Armstrong, Commander of the Apollo 11 and the first man to step on the surface of the Moon."
The original carbon copy of the letter is included with the lot, as well as a brochure "Our Flag - Display it! Respect it!" which was sent with the flag. An amazing group, in generally very good to excellent condition. The original TLS displays some toning to the paper and there is a rusty staple hole in the upper left corner. The original flag box is worn and scuffed. CAG 1001400-002 (flag), 1002088-021 (TLS), 1002088-022 (carbon copy) and 1002093-014 (brochure). This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
