Neil Armstrong's Personal Copy of "Lunar Landing Research Vehicle" Book by Bell Aerosystems for NASA, Directly from The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. A comb-bound 8.5" x 11" book inside soft covers, approximately 125 pages, Report No. 7161-954005 dated April 1, 1964, under NASA contract NAS 4-234. The purpose, as stated in the Introduction: "This manual and the manuals referenced herein contain all the information necessary for safe and efficient operation of the lunar landing research vehicle (LLRV). These instructions do not teach basic flight principles, but are designed to provide the pilot with a general knowledge of the LLRV, its flight characteristics, specific normal and emergency procedures, while operating in a realistic simulated lunar environment." The LLRV was used to study and analyze piloting techniques needed to fly and land a lunar module on the moon. On May 6, 1968, Neil Armstrong, training as backup commander of Apollo 9, walked away unhurt from a crash of an LLRV on his 22nd test flight. It was found that a loss of helium pressure caused depletion of the hydrogen peroxide used for the reserve attitude thrusters and that the vehicle's instrumentation did not provide adequate warning about the adverse situation. Before test flights proceeded, this problem was corrected. This was a very important piece of Armstrong's training for Eagle's landing on the moon. Very fine. CAG 1002048-002. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
