DescriptionNavy: U.S. Navy Official Close Up Photograph of an XFJ-2 Cockpit at Patuxent River, Maryland, 1952, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. Black & white. 5" x 4". Dated August 1952. Information stamped and completed by hand on the reverse. This was an experimental modification of the FJ-2, "The second and third aircraft to fly were designated XFJ-2 and lacked armament, but were modified to be carrier-capable: They had arrester hooks and longer nosewheel legs to increase angle of attack at take-off and landing, and catapult fittings. In August 1952 carrier trials were flown on USS Midway, followed by carrier qualification trials on USS Coral Sea in October–December 1952. Results were less than satisfactory: Low-speed handling was considered poor, while the arrester hook and nose gear leg were insufficiently strong." (Wikipedia). Ultimately, the FJ-2 was never a successful design. Staining along the top edge, otherwise fine. Sealed in a numbered archival holder, CAG 1002083-008. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
