Provenance is included with this lot- a photocopy of a page from a "Recommendation for Official Recognition" that reads, in part: "Mr. Hamilton was assigned as a member of a special task team to bring the Lunar Receiving Laboratory to a state of operational readiness to support Apollo 11... Working independent of day-to-day technical direction, he was able to develop, in an extremely short period, the necessary procedures for accomplishing this task... Mr. Hamilton should receive the full credit for accomplishing this very important facet of postflight testing. Mr. Hamilton's performance in this special assignment is considered outstanding." The full transcript is on our website. These LRL badges are extremely rare and desirable especially coming from the man who helped make the lab ready for Apollo 11. The lamination is peeling on the Apollo 11 badge; the rest are very fine. From the family collection of the late Donald T. Hamilton, a NASA engineer of 40+ years' service.
"Mr. Hamilton was assigned as a member of a special task team to bring the Lunar Receiving Laboratory to a state of operational readiness to support Apollo 11. When he was initially assigned this task, the basic plan for the release of the Apollo 11 spacecraft was not established. Therefore, his job was to establish a new and unique set of procedures and plans for the release of spacef1ight hardware from quarantine. Mr. Hamilton developed several alternate plans which were reviewed and one plan was selected for Apollo 11. Working independent of day-to-day technical direction, he was able to develop, in an extremely short period, the necessary procedures for accomplishing this task. To do this he was required to work with a variety of technical disciplines in the Manned Spacecraft Center which required a high level of technical understanding, degree of diplomacy, and the ability to motivate people to work as a team. He was extremely successful in all aspects of this task. Through his efforts the Apollo 11 spacecraft went through the decontamination procedures without any major problem and was released for postf1ight testing as scheduled. Mr. Hamilton should receive the full credit for accomplishing this very important facet of postflight testing. Mr. Hamilton's performance in this special assignment is considered outstanding. He had the capability and the desire to carry out this unique assignment often working long hours and giving unselfishly of his own time and energies. Without Mr. Hamilton's performance, it would have been impossible for this phase of the LRL operations to have been accomplished."
