    Handwritten letter to dad

Midshipman Neil Armstrong Autograph Letter Signed to His Father from the Naval Air Training Base, circa early 1949, Regarding His Will and Life Insurance, Directly from His Brother's Collection. One page front and back, 7" x 10.5" Pensacola, Florida, naval letterhead. It reads, in full:

    "Dear Dad,

"If you ever want to reach me for any emergency- just send a telegram to me at present address. It will go to the Communications office on base here, & they will get contact with me immediately, from there on I'll take over-

"Could you send me any information concerning the Ohio state laws concerning wills, as we are urged to make a will to take care of any possible accident in the program.

"I think I will convert my National Service Life Insurance from its present term state to a 20 pay-life policy. It will cost approx. $20 per mo. (20 minus the 6.40 the gov't pays while I am a midshipman) It will mature in twenty years at a $10,000 face value but will have only cost approx- $5000 + interest. Do you approve if you understand the policy (It is the same as 20 yr endowment, but you don't pay the entire $10,000. If you have any questions please write & I'll try to explain. I'll wait to see what you think. Your loving son NEIL"

On the two outside panels of the folded letter, Neil Armstrong has written in large letters: "To DAD Personal".

Armstrong began his training as a naval aviator at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola in late February 1949 as part of Pre-Flight training group Class 5-49 with four months of classroom training. This letter was likely written during that period. Quite an interesting letter from an eighteen year-old to his dad. Original mailing folds, light toning, his name smeared a bit, overall near fine. A Certificate of Authenticity from Neil's brother Dean Armstrong will accompany this lot.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
