    Description

Mercury Seven Astronauts: Early Photo Signed by Six (Missing Slayton) in Framed Display. Just a few months after the selection of NASA's Group One astronauts was announced in 1959, six of the seven toured the Air Force Atlas assembly line at Convair's San Diego plant. They spent a week there learning how the Atlas, which would eventually power four of them into space, was made. The six photos matted in this impressive display, 26" x 36.5" overall, were taken during this tour. The top center photo has the early-form signatures of the six who would fly in Project Mercury, all signed vertically in blue ballpoint: "Walter M Schirra Jr", "M Scott Carpenter", "John H Glenn Jr", "Alan B Shepard Jr", "Virgil I Grissom", and "Leroy G Cooper Jr". Included are two related photo press releases, one from Convair, dated September 23, 1959, specifically about this tour. A unique display from the earliest days of the original astronauts' training regimen. Photo is lightly toned with some minor surface creasing, overall fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
