Mercury Seven Astronauts: 1962 United Nations First Day Souvenir Sheet Signed by All. A 7.5" x 11.5" First Day of Issue sheet for the 4¢ and 11¢ "Man's Scientific Exploration for Peaceful Uses of Outer Space" stamps, dated December 3, 1962 and cancelled at the United Nations in New York. Explanatory text beneath the cachet and cancellation reads: "On December 13, 1958, the United Nations General Assembly established the Committee On Peaceful Uses Of Outer Space. Man's achievements in Space have been written in history with flights by American Astronauts." Beneath is a listing of the Mercury Seven astronauts, their flights to date, and their facsimile signatures in gold ink (at right). Authentic signatures of all seven have been added in various inks and at various times at left: "Alan Shepard", "Virgil I. Grissom", "John Glenn", "Scott Carpenter", "W M Schirra Jr", "Gordon Cooper", and "D K Slayton". We note that several of the printed flight dates are erroneous. Two horizontal folds, very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
