Mercury-Atlas 7 (Spacecraft 18 - Aurora 7): The Chronicle of a Spacecraft and Mission in Official Photos (300+). Part One. Offered here and in the following two lots is an unprecedented photographic history of the Mercury Spacecraft #18 (and Atlas launch vehicle #107-D), that flew Scott Carpenter into orbit on the fourth manned Mercury mission. The 300+ 8" x 10" glossy B&W photos in this lot appear to mostly be U.S. Air Force Photos for NASA, produced at the Air Force Missile Test Center Photo Lab operated by RCA. A few dozen perhaps have NASA image numbers on front. Essentially all of these have printed captions on the verso giving details and dates. This group concentrates on the assembly of the capsule and various run-throughs, both in the white room and at sea, by Carpenter and his backup Wally Schirra. Included are extensive print-outs that summarize each image with titles, photo numbers, and dates; most of the photos have a small handwritten number attached that relates to these lists. We can't imagine being able to assemble this group of images except by bidding for and winning these lots. The photos are crisp and clean as stored for decades in Kodak photo boxes, generally excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
