    Description

Mercury 7 Type M Astronaut's Test Gloves Worn by John Glenn and Wally Schirra. This pair of 11" x 4" aluminized nylon gloves was manufactured by the B. F. Goodrich Company for NASA during the agency's testing of the Mercury Astronauts' spacesuits. Both gloves include an internal cloth Project Mercury label, and the names "Glenn" and "Shirra" (sic) are written in black marker inside the aluminum fittings. The outside of each glove includes pen markings indicating where leaks occurred. This pair was given to an employee of McDonnell Douglas who had worked on the Mercury Project, the United States' first manned spaceflight program. On April 9, 1959, NASA announced its first seven astronauts: Glenn and Schirra were joined by fellow former test pilots Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. This rare pair of spacesuit testing gloves offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire a true piece of history used by two of the first humans to venture into space. Moderate wear on the exterior, else fine.
