    Description

Mars Observer: 1999 Original Jeff Koterba Editorial Cartoon Poking Fun at the Error That Doomed the Mission. A 15" x 11" board with artwork showing the Observer about to crash into the Jet Propulsion Laboratory with a conversation inside: "Kilometers? I thought you said miles..." and "No big deal... It's all about the same..." This was published in the Omaha World-Herald near the time of the aborted mission. The technical reason for the failure was that one piece of ground software supplied by Lockheed Martin produced results in a United States customary unit, contrary to its Software Interface Specification (SIS), while a second system, supplied by NASA, expected those results to be in SI units, in accordance with the SIS. On top of that, two navigators realized the error but NASA ignored their warnings because they hadn't filled out the forms properly (government bureaucracy at work). A very neat item. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
