    Description

Julius Mader Book: ТАЙНА ХАНТСЬИЛЛА (The Secret of Huntsville: The True Career of Rocket Baron Werhner von Braun). (Moscow: Politizdat, 1964). A rare first Soviet edition of a 1963 book published in East Berlin, the first book that published the facts about von Braun's activities at Mittelwerk and his SS membership. Julius Mader, a popular author, was a covert officer in the Ministry of State Security, the secret-police, and foreign-intelligence agency colloquially known as the "Stasi." His German edition of this book had a dust jacket with a drawing of von Braun in a black SS uniform, skull and crossbones on his cap, and Knight's Cross around his neck. It included a discussion of the Mittelwerk and the Dora camps. The book mixed damaging and true facts with completely fabricated scenes making it easy enough to discount as simply propaganda. It was a big seller in the Soviet-bloc and was even the basis for a movie. It was never published in English and caused few problems for NASA and von Braun. Russian language, softbound, small octavo, 181 pages, lightly illustrated. Good. From the family collection of the late Tom McFadden.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
