Offered here is a beautiful red and white Gentex HGU-55/P (thick edge roll) fighter/ attack flight helmet, size large, complete with an attached MBU 5-P oxygen mask (with avionics), nylon chin strap with leather cushion, and a visor housing with dual drop down visors- clear and tinted. The body of the helmet is bright red with "YOUNG" printed in white on the back. The visor housing is white with a printed 5" x 4" (overall) NASA color logo. Young's green nylon, zippered helmet storage bag is 18" x 15" with a 3.5" gusset and dual carry handles. An inside tag reads: "BAG, FLYER'S HELMET/ DLA100-91-F-EC28/ 8415-00-782-2989/ UNICOR". His stenciled nametag ("YOUNG") is sewn on. Found in the pockets of this bag were a blue cloth skullcap (to be worn beneath the helmet) and a red baseball-style cap with a 2.5" NASA embroidered logo sewn on the front.

Also included in this lot is Young's pilot kneeboard- a cloth-covered clipboard, with black nylon foldover flaps for storage of small items, that straps around the leg above the knee and is held in place with Velcro closures. On the clipboard are approximately two dozen 5" x 8" sheets of paper with hundreds of handwritten notations including various Pilot Flight Records, Flight Logs, and Flight Plans. All items are in very fine condition. Offered elsewhere in this auction is Young's T-38 flight suit.

On the back of the helmet, John Young has written: "My Flight-Used T-38 Helmet. John Young".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
