    Description

James A. Van Allen Signed Explorer 1 / Jupiter-C Rocket Original NASA Photo. An 8" x 10" glossy B&W photo from 1958 of the Explorer 1 satellite aboard a Jupiter rocket on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, signed vertically up the rocket in black ink: "J A Van Allen". This American space scientist, known for his work in magnetospheric physics, led the scientific community in including research instruments on space satellites including Explorer I, the first launched by the U.S. (as shown in this photo). The Van Allen radiation belts are named for him and he was included in TIME magazine's "Man of the Year" issue in 1960. A very rare image and autograph. Light creasing and wear, fine.
