Gordon Cooper's Hardhat from NBC-affiliate WFGA-TV 12, in Jacksonville Florida. An 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" hardhat bearing Cooper's name and issued by the local NBC station in Jacksonville, which is considered part of Florida's "Space Coast". The front and sides of the helmet bear various NBC and WFGA logos, along with Cooper's name on the front. The back of the helmet has a Telstar satellite logo, along with ten rocket decals. Each rocket decal gives a rocket name along with a launch month and year. It appears that the Mercury-Atlas 9 decal was the last one added to the helmet. This was the final crewed mission of the Mercury program, on which Cooper was the lone astronaut. This was also the last time an American conducted an entirely solo orbital mission. The hat has no signs of any damage and appears to be in the same excellent condition as when it was presented to Cooper.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
