    Description

Gemini 9A Flown Silver Fliteline Medallion Made into a Pin, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Gene Cernan, with Letter of Authenticity from Barbara Cernan. This 25mm x 19mm sterling silver medal was flown aboard Gemini 9 with crew members Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan during June 3-6, 1966. Originally selected as the backup crew, Stafford and Cernan replaced original prime crew members Elliott See and Charles Bassett after they tragically died in a plane crash less than four months earlier. The medallion is shaped like a shield, and the design features the Roman numeral "IX," the Gemini craft docked to the Agena target vehicle, and a spacewalking astronaut whose tether forms the number 9. The surnames of the crew and the mission dates are engraved on the reverse along with the sterling hallmark. A pin is attached to the verso for ease of wear or display. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed LOA from Barbara Cernan Butler on her letterhead stating, in full: "The accompanying Gemini 9 silver Fliteline Medallion, later made into a pin, was flown aboard Gemini 9 by my husband Eugene Cernan June 3-6, 1966 and was from his personal collection."
