    Description

Gemini 8 Flown Heat Shield Plug in Capsule-Shaped Display Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty with Photo Certificate. A segment, approximately 1.25" diameter x 1.75", sealed in a plastic representation of the spacecraft itself, overall 2.875" diameter x 4.75" long. This is mounted to a triangular-shaped base, 4" x 5.25" overall, underneath which is engraved: "Presented To/ Lockheed Missiles & Space Co./ Heat Shield of/ Gemini VIII/ 1st Docking In/ Space N. Armstrong/ D. Scott/ March 16, 1966". This mission did indeed perform the first ever orbital docking, to an Agena Target Vehicle. Unfortunately, while docked, a thruster stuck causing the spacecraft to roll. Even after undocking, it continued to tumble forcing an early end to the mission and a very uncomfortable situation for the astronauts. Armstrong's quick action averted a major disaster. Light wear, otherwise excellent. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
