Gemini 6A Flown MS64 NGC Silver-colored Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Wally Schirra, with His Signed Certificate of Authenticity. This 25mm medal was flown aboard Gemini 6A, which performed a space rendezvous with Gemini 7 in orbit on the afternoon of December 15, 1965. Onboard were Wally Schirra and Thomas Stafford. The obverse features the hexagonal mission insignia reflecting the mission number; the spacecraft trajectory also traces out the number "6". The Gemini 6 spacecraft is shown superimposed on the "twin stars" Castor and Pollux, for "Gemini." The obverse also has "Schirra" and "Stafford" with the original mission designation "GTA-6" (for Gemini-Titan-Agena). The reverse has the dates of the flight and the revised mission designation "GT-GT-6". A beautiful Choice Uncirculated example.Included with this lot is an informative signed COA on Schirra's letterhead reading, in full: "This medallion flew in space during December 15 and 16, 1965 on the Gemini 6 mission. I was mission commander and Tom Stafford served as pilot. The medallion became a part of history when we completed the world's first manned space flight rendezvous with Gemini 7 on December 15. Our original GTA-6 mission emblem is on the front of the medallion with the mission dates engraved on the back. GTA-6 or Gemini Titan Agena 6 was the first mission plan calling for our Gemini spacecraft to rendezvous and dock with an Agena target vehicle. The design showing a Gemini and Agena following a pattern shaped as the number "6" reflects that rendezvous sequence. However, on October 25, 1965 the Agena failed to reach orbit and our mission was scrubbed. A plan for a rendezvous with the next manned flight, Gemini 7, was devised and set for the middle of December 1965. On December 12, our Titan rocket engines started then immediately shut-down while still on the pad. We scrubbed again but finally made it to orbit three days later on December 15. Gemini 6 returned to earth on December 16 while fellow astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell in Gemini 7 continued to a then record 14 days in space. We were able to update our space suit cloth patch design showing another Gemini spacecraft instead of the Agena. But there was not enough time to create new medallions before the flight, so we carried the original set made."
