    Description

Gemini 5 Flown MS61 NGC Gilt over Silver Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gordon Cooper, with His Signed Letter of Authenticity. This 25mm gold-colored sterling silver medal was flown aboard Gemini 5, which doubled the space-flight record of the Gemini 4 mission to eight days, the length of time that it would take to fly a mission to the moon. Onboard Gemini 5 were Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad, Jr. The obverse of the medal shows a covered wagon. It was also has "8 Days or Bust" across the wagon. The reverse has the dates of the flight engraved. A nice uncirculated example.

Included with this lot is a signed detailed LOA from Cooper on his letterhead reading, in full: "This Gemini 5 medallion flew in space from August 21 to 29, 1965. I was spacecraft commander with fellow astronaut Charles Conrad, Jr. as pilot. It was carried onboard in my personal preference kit and became a part of history when we completed this record breaking eight day flight. The medallion is made of sterling silver and was gold plated prior to our launch on August 21. Very few gold plated medallions were made for this flight and weight restrictions for all Gemini missions limited the number of personal items that could be carried on any flight. The covered wagon reflects the pioneering spirit of this early Gemini flight. Our successful completion of Gemini 5 marked the beginning of the U.S. lead in manned space exploration. The medallion is from my personal collection."
