Astronauts shown in the lighter moments of training.

Gemini 4: Two Rare Original NASA Training Photos Directly from the Personal Collection of Ed White II. Affirming that the astronauts could still enjoy themselves while enduring the rigors of training for their missions, here are two 10" x 8" B&W glossy photos: (1) NASA "S-63-6662" with purple caption on verso: "4/23/63 Astronaut Trainees White, McDivitt, Armstrong participating in weightless flight." The three NASA Group Two astronauts are shown doing the "Three Wise Monkeys" pose with White as "see no evil," McDivitt as "hear no evil," and Armstrong as "speak no evil." Interestingly, before his selection as an astronaut, White actually piloted these large cargo planes on astronaut training flights. He was quoted in the June 18, 1965 issue of LIFE Magazine: "I flew the big Air Force cargo planes through weightless maneuvers to test what happens to a pilot in zero-gravity. Two of my passengers were John Glenn and Deke Slayton, who were practicing weightless flying for Project Mercury... Two other passengers of mine were Ham and Enos, the chimps that went up before the Astronauts." A terrific photo and one we've not seen offered. Excellent condition; (2) NASA "S-63-8396" with blank back. This photo, taken in June 1963 during tropical survival training at Albrook Air Force Base near the Panama Canal, shows some of the astronauts taking a break and mugging for the camera: Neil Armstrong, Ed White II, John Glenn Jr., and Deke Slayton, with Pete Conrad visible in the background. Standing with them is an unidentified local trainer. The astronauts underwent training in several extreme terrains in case that a misguided landing or an aborted mission cast them into unfamiliar and inhospitable surroundings. Another great photo we've not seen. Extremely fine condition.

Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.
