    Gemini 4: General Thomas D. White Space Trophy and Citation Awarded to Ed White II in 1966 and Directly from His Personal Collection. Included in this lot are four items: (1) A handsome and quite heavy (approximately 7.5 lbs) gold-colored, high-relief, metal trophy plaque of 8" x 11" with the engraved text: "The General Thomas D. White United States Air Force Space Trophy Awarded To Astronaut Edward H. White II, U.S. Air Force, 1965 For Outstanding Contribution To The Nation's Progress in Aerospace". It is marked on the reverse "Felix De Weldon, Sc./ 1961" and "Trophy Presented by/ Thomas W. McKnew/ Washington D.C." Very fine condition; (2) The "Citation To Accompany the 1965 Award of the General Thomas D. White USAF Space Trophy to Astronaut Edward H. White II Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force For his outstanding contributions to the U.S. exploration of space by becoming the first self-propelled human in outer space." This certificate is 13.5" x 10.375" sight size, framed to 14.5" x 11.375" overall. It details the accomplishments of White during the Gemini 4 mission and is signed by the Air Force Chief of Staff John P. McConnell. Fine condition, light overall foxing; (3) An 8" x 10" B&W photo of the full size statue of this trophy; and (4) A photocopy of a letter of congratulations from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey to White, dated July 28, 1966.

    This was the fifth year this prestigious award was given. Previous winners from the astronaut corps had been Gus Grissom (1961) and Gordon Cooper (1963). "The White Space Trophy is awarded annually to a unit, member, or civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force for an outstanding contribution to progress in astronautics during the preceding year. The trophy was established by the National Geographic Society in 1961 and was named in honor of then Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Thomas D. White." (Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum website).

    Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.
