Description

Presented to Ed White II by President Johnson.

Gemini 4: Exceptional Service Medal Citation Presented by NASA to Ed White II in 1965 and Directly from His Personal Collection. A 13.625" x 10.625" (sight size) certificate, dated June 11, 1965, with beautifully rubricated and illuminated hand-lettering, signed by NASA Administrator "James E. Webb" and NASA Deputy Administrator "Hugh L. Dryden". It reads: "The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Presents the NASA Exceptional Service Medal to Edward H. White, II For outstanding contributions to space flight and engineering. His performance as Pilot, during the four-day Gemini Mission and as the first man to engage in self-propelled extravehicular activity significantly extended our knowledge of the space environment and man's capabilities in space flight." The NASA seal is affixed at lower left. The actual medal is not present. The certificate appears to be in excellent condition (not examined out of frame); the 15" x 12" frame has some scratches and dings.

Included with the certificate are two photos taken at the medal presentation ceremony at Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1965, as follows: (1) A color 8" x 10" photo of President Johnson standing between McDivitt and White on the White House steps. Both astronauts are wearing their medals; and (2) A B&W 10" x 8" photo with NASA caption on the back showing President Johnson pinning the medal on White's lapel. Interestingly, fellow Gemini 4 astronaut James McDivitt can be clearly seen in the photo with his matching Exceptional Service Medal citation.

Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.
