Gemini 3 (Molly Brown) Flown Gold-Plated Silver Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Pilot Gus Grissom, with Signed LOA from his Widow. This 25mm sterling silver medal flew on America's first two-man space mission, March 23, 1965, along with Gus Grissom and John Young. The obverse features the mission insignia of a space capsule floating in the water with "The Molly Brown" and the crew's full names above and below. The reverse has a struck "GT-3" and an engraved mission date along with the sterling hallmark. Grissom named the flight after the Broadway play, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a lighthearted reference to his first spacecraft Liberty Bell 7, which sank after splashdown. NASA was not happy with the name, but relented; this was the last Gemini flight the astronauts were allowed to name. Original case included (minor crack on top). The plating on the reverse is wearing off, otherwise excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity by Betty Grissom stating, in part: "I do attest that this is an original gold-colored medal that was flown in space during the Gemini 3 mission on March 23, 1965."
