Description

Gemini 12: James Lovell's Recovery Flight Suit Worn on the U.S.S. Wasp after the Mission, Directly from His Personal Collection, with Signed LOA. A standard blue NASA flight suit, owned and worn by James Lovell. At the neck is the manufacturer's tag from "Flite Wear by Land Mfg. Co." of Wichita, Kansas with the size tag "38 Regular" beneath. An embroidered 2.75" diameter NASA "Meatball" patch is sewn on the left breast and a 3"diameter Gemini 12 mission insignia patch is on the right. Velcro adjustments at the waist with multiple zippers and pockets all over. After splashdown in the Atlantic on November 15, 1966, Commander Lovell and Pilot Aldrin were recovered and transported to the U.S.S. Wasp. There, they got out of their spacesuits and changed into matching flight suits for the celebration party. Not only was this a successful mission, it was the last mission in the Gemini series. Several photos are extant of Lovell wearing this flight suit, the one at the Gemini 12 "cake cutting" is included with this lot. Note that in all these photos, Lovell has a gold bullion stripe on his left sleeve and a ship's patch beneath the NASA patch; these are no longer on this suit. We did carefully examine these areas and found evidence of where they had been stitched on and later removed. A great souvenir of a landmark mission and project. Very fine condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Lovell on his company letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that this Recovery Flight Suit was worn on the USS Wasp after Gemini XII landed in the Atlantic Ocean on 15 November 1966. This recovery flight suit is from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the Gemini XII mission."
