DescriptionGemini 11 Flown Heat Shield Plug in Lucite. This was originally from the collection of Paul Sturtevant, special assistant to the Project Gemini manager at NASA. A section, 0.75" x 0.75" x 1.75", sealed in a Lucite cylinder, 3" in diameter x 2.5" tall with "GEMINI XI/ SEPT. 12-15, 1966" engraved on the bottom. Gemini 11, with crewmembers Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon, accomplished a rendezvous and docking with an Agena Target Vehicle immediately after attaining orbit, testing a procedure that the Apollo moon missions would need to execute. Gemini 11 achieved the highest-ever Earth orbit by an American manned spacecraft, 741 nautical miles. Excellent condition.
A copy of a Letter of Authenticity from the daughter of Mr. Sturtevant will accompany this lot.
