Edgar Mitchell "Single-Signed" Apollo 14 Insurance Cover Originally from His Personal Collection, Signed and Certified, with COA. A philatelic cover postmarked with a pictorial cancellation from Kennedy Space Center, January 31, 1971 (launch date), bearing a U.S. 10¢ "First Man on the Moon" (Scott #C76) stamp. It is attached by archival corners to a full-color illustrated certificate. The cachet bears the mission insignia with three pair of aviator wings beneath as seen only on the official Bishop covers available only to the crew. The cover is signed in blue ink: "Official Crew Cover From Personal Collection/ Edgar Mitchell". Insurance covers were typically signed by the entire crew before the flight and left behind for the families to sell should their loved ones not survive the mission. This one was not, as explained below. Excellent

The text of the illustrated Certificate of Authenticity included, in part: "Prior to Apollo 14's launch, crewmembers Edgar D. Mitchell, Alan Shepard, and Stuart Rosa were presented with special Apollo 14 postal covers by the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club. The covers were produced for the crew to sign in pre-flight quarantine, and then leave behind with their families as an asset that could be sold if they were killed during the mission. Apollo 14 'Insurance Covers' are identified in this case by the three aviator wings printed below the "Mission Emblem" cachet. All the 'Insurance Covers,' including this example, accompanied the crew into quarantine where most were signed. The crew also left some covers blank (including this copy) to be postmarked with the signed covers on launch day. Once postmarked, all of the covers were flown via NASA T-38A jet aircraft to Houston for distribution to their wives. Dr. Mitchell later inscribed these covers with a notation officially certifying their status as 'Crew Insurance Covers,' after conserving them in his space collection from 1971 until 1999, when he de-accessioned them for collectors..."
