Ed White II: Photos and Souvenir of NASA's Astronaut Group Two from His Personal Collection. Three great images: (1) 8" x 10" color photo of the "New Nine" in training jumpsuits posed around a Gemini capsule model, taken for LIFE magazine; (2) 4.25" x 5.25" sepia Polaroid image of the same group posed in business suits; and (3) 10" x 8" B&W NASA photo picturing the second group along with Deke Slayton and Ray Zedehar (astronaut training officer) in their finest "Lawrence of Arabia" attire during desert training near Stead AFB in 1963. All in excellent condition.

Previous to the public announcement of the second group of astronauts, NASA had concerns about their names leaking out to the press. The night before the public introduction, the astronauts-elect stayed in the Rice Hotel in Houston. They were all checked in under a false name, that of the hotel manager Max E. Peck. Offered in this lot is a typed letter signed, text as follows: "Dear Astronaut Peck: It has been a pleasure to have you in the Rice Hotel. We hope on your next visit to Houston you will again honor us by staying in the Rice. Should we in any way or at any time be of service to you, please do not hesitate to advise. The very best to you on your new venture. Sincerely [signed] Max E. Peck". The phrase "new venture" is quite the understatement; six of these astronauts would end up flying to the moon! The envelope addressed simply "Room 1622" is included. White kept this as a souvenir of this important event in his life. Fine condition.
