Ed White II: His U.S. Military Academy Army Letterman's Jacket from 1952, with Handwritten LOA from Ed White III. Includes photos of him wearing it. This cadet-gray zipper-front jacket, with an elastic-banded bottom and one slant pocket, has a "Cadet Store" tag in the neck bearing his handwritten name. Army gray letters as follows: on the left chest is "52" above the USMA letter patch. The large Army "A" with a two gold stars in the field, and three below is on the right chest. White was quite the athlete at West Point, lettering in both Track and Soccer and ranking first in Physical Education all four years. As a hurdler, he missed going to the 1952 Olympics by the smallest margin at the trials. White's father was a 1924 graduate of West Point, and like him, Ed II chose the Air Force when he graduated. After a stint in Germany, he earned his master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1959. Chosen to be an astronaut by NASA in 1962, he was the first American to walk in space during Gemini 4 in 1965. He perished in a January 1967 Apollo 1 training accident. This jacket is a very important relic of this American hero's service to our country. Overall very fine.Included with this lot is the 1952 West Point Howitzer Yearbook. A massive 474 page, 9.5" x 12" x 1.25" yearbook for the United States Military Academy celebrating the sesquicentennial class. Little did any of these members of the "Long Grey Line" suspect that two of their number (Michael Collins was also in this class) would become world famous for flying in space! White's activities included Camera Club, Spanish Club, Skeet Club, Ski Club, Soccer, and Track. His short bio includes the lines: "He craves excitement and adventure and seldom passes up the chance to do something extraordinary. Ed is a strong Air Force file and is sure to reach the top". Truer words were never spoken. Unsigned. Good.
Also included with this lot is a handwritten letter of authenticity from Edward H. White III. It reads, in full: "My father, Edward H. White II, was part of a family that had a long and proud history in various branches of the military. In addition to my grandfather's career in the Army/ Air Force (retired as a Major General), two of my great uncles has solid careers in the Army and Marines. West Point had graduated two members of my family and there was no question that my dad would try to attend as well- and he did- as part of the class of 1952. Attending and graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point was one of the highlights of my father's life. While at West Point my father participated in athletics on the soccer and track teams. He earned his varsity letter plus five additional stars as signified on his letter jacket (photos included). He proudly wore his jacket in subsequent years and I remember seeing him wear it for numerous Army / Navy football game parties. The jacket is certainly one of my father's favorite possessions."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
