Also included with the photos are eleven tiny mustard seeds in an original Fliteline case. The mustard seed was used, likely for its extremely diminutive size, by Jesus in His teachings on faith in the Bible. Luke 17:6 reads: "And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you" (KJV). Matthew 17:20 reads: "...verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (KJV).White took these into orbit as a symbol of his religious faith. They were in his spacesuit pocket as he made his legendary spacewalk pictured among the above photos. Included with this lot is a photocopy of a letter from Norman Vincent Peale dated just before the Gemini 4 mission. It reads, in small part: "You don't need to take a mustard seed with you as a symbol of your faith; you have the faith itself, and the inner sturdiness that will carry you through this tremendous and rewarding experience." Excellent.
