Description

Deke Slayton 1972-Dated Typed Letter Signed Regarding Apollo 15 Flown Philatelic Covers. One page, NASA letterhead, 8" x 10.5", August 22, 1972, Houston, Texas, to Forrest E. Cook. Very interesting content, from the Director of Flight Crew Operations, about a subject that was quite controversial at the time. It reads, in full: "Thank you for your recent letter regarding the Apollo 15 covers and astronaut personal preference kits. We also hope that the Apollo 17 crew will be allowed to carry some items as crews in the past have; however, as you can imagine there are many people who do not agree with me and I cannot tell you at this point in time what the final result will be. In any case, we appreciate your interest and concern and hope that the crew is allowed to do as you requested." Signed: "D K Slayton". Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
