Columbia Space Shuttle High Temperature Insulation Panel, 23.5" x 13". Printed on the panel: "V070-197108-001/ SN 001/ HI TEMP INSUL." Affixed is a 6" x 3.25" tag imprinted "Unserviceable (Reparable)/ Tag - Materiel" noted "Insulator," "HDA for Scrapping," and "Removed from/ OV 102." OV 102, Orbiter Vehicle 102, was the Columbia space shuttle. Stamped is "Oct 10 '97" indicating the date this panel was removed from America's first space shuttle. The maiden voyage of "Columbia" was April 12-14, 1981. Its second flight, November 12-14, 1981, marked the first time a manned space vehicle had been reflown. After its 23rd flight (STS-94), July 1-17, 1997, this insulation panel was removed and replaced in time for its 24th flight (STS-87), November 19 - December 5, 1997. "Columbia:" was rolled out to the launching pad on October 29, 1997, 19 days after this High Temperature Insulation Panel was removed. On its 28th flight, on February 1, 2003, minutes before its scheduled landing, Columbia broke up while traveling at 12,500 mph at an altitude of 207,135 feet, resulting in the loss of both vehicle and crew.
