DescriptionBuzz Aldrin: Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver McLean Award Originally from His Personal Collection. A 7.5" x 7.5" (overall) star-shaped dish with the following engraved beneath the hospital's logo: "The McLean Award presented to Buzz Aldrin. With deep appreciation for your tremendous efforts in furthering the public's understanding of issues in substance abuse and mental health. McLean Hospital. July 14, 2009." When Aldrin accepted this award at Boston's InterContinental Hotel on the above date, he spoke about his own struggles with depression and alcoholism. His public admissions through the years about his struggles have been instrumental in lessening the stigma associated with these mental health issues. Slightly tarnished (easily cleaned if so desired), very fine.
The McLean Hospital, a psychiatric facility of the Harvard Medical School, was founded in 1811 and is known for its ground-breaking neuroscience research and expert staff. Through the years, it has treated many famous people; Sylvia Plath's recounted some of her experiences at McLean in her novel The Bell Jar.
